Have not flown in about 2 years. Wore a money belt with Traveller's checks and cash last time to Vegas. No problems going thru security. My neighbor said that's not going to work anymore with the full scanners. Does everything have to come out of your pockets? What do you do with cash and wallet? Not a fan of ATM's because of cost. So, what advice do you folks have in the carry of cash when you fly to a gaming city?

Thanks

Just load up your debit card; and withdraw cash once you get to the casino...

Sure there is a fee at the atm but a small price to pay for the convenience and safety while traveling...

Coin goes in the off white little tray along with most pocket items. You can put cash in your hands which are held over your head. Frank-S

John,

I fly to Harraha's Laughlin on their junket jet once a Month.... for 2 1/2 yrs.

I took out a credit application for a Casino marker account that I can deposit check $$$$ into upon my Casino arrivals.

That way, I can draw cash from my marker account that I have pre-funded.

If you have a bank account at BOA or Wells Fargo, you are good to go. There may be other national banks there. It is not illegal to carry cash with you. You could make a deposit with the casino in advance. Or open a line of credit with one or several casinos. Plan in advance.

It only becomes an issue if you are carrying a large sum of money. Due to my line of work, I'm not allowed to state the amount, but look up Bank Secrecy Act or Title 31 Loggable Transactions and you'll get the figures. They're looking to stop money laundering activity and in doing so, it ends up being a blanket action against everyone.

What you should do instead is simple really. First, never use an ATM inside a casino. Fees are higher and it doesn't matter what bank/credit union you use as the casino ATM's are affiliated with none of them. If you are a regular at the casino, call ahead and ask for either a Casino Host or Cage Manager. Let them know you wish to bring X amount of dollars to play with and would like to know if you can bring a Cashier's Check. If so, do that. No fees at the cage for doing so. Last resort, bring no cash but establish a check cashing account at the casino you wish to play at. Depending on their policy, they'll give you a limit that they will allow per day/visit and you'll be able to write checks up to that amount with no fees. The true last resort, sign up for a Marker account. This will usually take a week to process, but it will be all set up for your following trips. No fees for it, but you must be able to pay back what you owe within 30 days or they send the marker to your bank to collect on it. No penalties for it as a marker acts like a check. Also, you must be willing to give them a lot of personal information such as SSN, home address, employer and work address, etc.

Biggest thing here: Casino's charge NOTHING to write a check. If they do, you're at the wrong casino. I'm working for my 4th casino and 0 out of 4 have charged for writing a check. If you wish to bring a Cashier's Check, you MUST call ahead and OK it with the Cage Manager or Casino Host. Most casino's do NOT take Cashier's Checks. Too much fraud. NONE will take a Money Order. Again, too much fraud.

If you wish to use an ATM, just use one outside the casino's. Credit Union's are allowed to use any other Credit Union's ATM's at NO FEE. They are all co-oped together. The large banks should all have an ATM somewhere near the Strip. Take the walk to them if the $6 in fees is too much for you.

Unless your carry over $10,000 in cash you will have no problem. I hold all my cash in my hands when in a full body scanner. If they say anything to you about the cash, just say Vegas Baby! You will have no problem if you win over $10,000 just get the casino to cut you a check!

When going into Canada you need to declare how much money you are taking into Canada, and the same when you are coming back out. When you are returning from Canada they will ask where you are coming from and what was your business in Canada. You just tell them you were gambling.

The same thing goes if anybody stops you going thru security at the airport! For the craps players out there,.. Canada is a great place to play, if I was living on the east coast, anywhere near there, that's were I would head to, unless it was winter. I hate the cold, the high for Vegas today will be in the high 60's, it's a great place to live if you are a gambler!

Any national banks work well, opening up a credit line with several casinos also works great! You also had the answer to you own question ,..with Traveller's checks! That way you can carry a large sum of money with no problem and be safe about it!

I hate to use ATM, or as far as that goes even credit cards, so I'm always carrying cash. I have never had any problem in the airports. My wallet only has $20 in it at all times. That is let's just say my throw down, anybody can take that if they want too,.. there is nothing in it but junk.

There is nothing like having a gun stuck in your face after you had a big win in a casino. Yes players still get robbed by being stupid and flashing big money when they are at the tables, or they just hit a big jackpot! That goes for any place there are casinos! I know a don't player that carries $30,000 on him at all times, and would pull out big wads of cash at the tables.

I've told him that he was going to get robbed for years, and finally got him to count out his buy-in's and put them in different pockets, only pulling out one buy-in at a time, he hit several casinos a day, and will at times drop up to $10,000 in one casino. The guy is a local, and old habits are hard to quit! I hate to say it but I deal with Bank of America, because I can find a bank in any city I go to play craps in.

Before I moved to Vegas that was the reason I went with Bank of America, we needed a bank in Vegas that was back in Fla.

So under $10,000 don't sweat it, or go with the Traveller's checks!

Planing a long extended trip gambling anywhere takes planing one of the things that is going on right now is the cops have been stopping players out on the US 15 when driving into town or out and asking if they can search the players car. They found out that it's easy money if they find over $10,000 in the car, and confiscate it. Not to long ago they got some guy from Salt Lake that had $150,000 in his car, and it was like they hit the jackpot.

Now while driving on US 15 you will see people pulled over and the cops doing a search of their car, you don't have to submit to a search, so when asked say no!

Thanks for all the excellent advice! Do have a Chase Debit card. Good advice on holding some cash in your hands at the scanner. Usually drive to Tunica twice a year with Travellers Checks and cash. Who knows, may plan a LV trip this Fall. Flying just isn't any fun these days!

On a side note, wife and I are driving past the new Rivers Casino
in Des Plaines (Chicago) next week and may stop for a quick looksee. Will let you know what I think of this new casino.

Coming back through McCarran a couple of months ago, I had several Benjamins in one of those skimpy bags that is tied around the waist and goes under the shirt/trousers. Got a secondary inspection in which the guy just asked to see it and didn't have to open it. He did feel it.

Years ago John recommended that I get casino credit. The method I chose at the time, was a check cashing limit. I have same in each location that we frequent. The exception is the Fla area, where there is a BOA close to our time share. For this reason the only time the money involved in air travel is taking winnings home. That too is occasional, as we also carry a made out bond fund deposit for each of us. If the winning can be in check form, it is on the way prior to our departure. Frank-S

For years I've kept an account at a large regional bank strictly for my gaming funds - this bank just happens to have locations in the locations that get the majority of my play - Tunica, Shreveport/Bossier, New Orleans, Biloxi/Gulfport, etc. But when I go to Vegas I usually use my casino credit there. If you don't want to do that any casino will gladly accept a wire transfer of front money to be held for you at the cage.
